Zeihan on Geopolitics

No one really looks at maps until geopolitics happen. Never realized that Okinawa is closer to Taiwan than the Japanese mainland. And, Taketomi Island is only 300km from Taiwan.

@Pooburr 1- my Dad is a Navy Vet (stationed in FL though) 2- Grew up before internet was widely available (cheap AOL accounts) 3- one of the most educated kids on the planet because...my parents didn't let us watch TV. I read Encyclopedia Britannica for fun. And, we had a globe in our living room. 4- decent standard public school education But, we ain't studying battle maps of World War 2. Maybe they had a few pictures in our textbooks back then, but certainly not the same level of information available today.

@jasonblack4208 And, I thought about it more. It's an East Coast bias thing. I know way more about Europe WW2 than the Pacific. And, the bias is even in college. Took a Western Civilization class in college and transferred to a West Coast school. They didn't transfer my credit. I had to re-take the class as World Civilization. (And, I've probably visited Gettysburg / Antietam like a half a dozen times. Back then, I probably could draw Civil War battle maps.)

Everyone in Hawaii loves the Japanese now. And, Hawaii never recovered from the Japanese "lost decades". Really hurt them in the '90s. Edit: fun fact. In the '90s, you could stay in the dorms in U of Hawaii and claim residency. Then, you could get in-state tuition. (and, then they changed the rules as the economy started to fade.)

@martinluescher5009 It's extremely weird proving my middle school bona fides, but here we go: - my friend and I were using the old BBS in 4th grade - I was reading Homer, Steinbeck and Shakespeare in 6th / 7th grade because my Dad was an English teacher - I learned computer programing in the summer of 5th grade at a JUCO - I took the SATs (college entrance exams) in 7th grade as part of the Johns Hopkins program But, this is the reality of life. My parents taught us too much independence. And, we weren't rich. Never pushed any of us and let us make our own decisions even in elementary / middle school ie I quit Lacrosse to play Baseball and hated Baseball. Then, switched back to Lacrosse.
