Actually, it did make sense. Was a quagmire like Vietnam. Only people over 70 remember Vietnam (born after 1950). Maybe people in their 60s a bit.

(Un)fortunately, the US military would follow a ROE. Nothing would be attacked unless the CCP attacked first. The US would go into defend mode for Taiwan, but wouldn't take an offensive stance first. All bets would be off if the CCP attacked Okinawa or US bases in Korea (or Philippines now).

@RogueReplicant The Philippine government has authorized new bases for the US mlitary.

@muay_khao He'll go down as one of the most influential POTUS in modern history. The massive shift to re-shoring / near-shoring is a fundamental change in our economic structure.

In the past, I would subscribe to this. The Russian invasion has changed my opinion a bit. Quantity matters too. Sure seems like Japan / Korea is attacking this issue a bit better. They have a bunch of new cheaper, but extremely capable ships. Japan's Mogami-class frigate is under $400M. Korea's Sejong-class destroyer is around $1B.

@frankmazzur5674 Kinda. Would more be US and maybe Japan. AU might get involved, but they don't have that many vessels. Australians would support responding to a Chinese attack on Taiwan with economic sanctions, arms supplies or using the navy to prevent a blockade, but don't support sending troops, an opinion poll to be released Wednesday finds. Korea has to stay at home in case the North does something dumb. Yoon told a CNN interviewer in September 2022 that in the event of a Taiwan Strait war, his “top priority” would not be assisting Taiwan, but rather guarding against an opportunistic North Korean attack. South Korea is arguably capable of defending itself against North Korea even without U.S. forces. Japan would probably deploy to their outer islands, but might not take an offensive stance. Ultimately, Japan's leaders know the importance of keeping the Taiwan Strait out of CCP hands. The public is different though. The Philippines main asset is the new bases they are allowing the US to use. Vietnam would stay out of it. Edit: (grammar)

If China attacks Taiwan, North Korea is getting involved somehow. Even if it's to rabble-rouse. Russia will make "noise" near Japan as a distraction as well.

@nicholassmith7984 The Bush Jr, Obama, Trump triumvirate was pretty poor. But to be fair, it's hard. Carter wasn't great. Nixon sucked. Reagan did a lot of shady stuff. We aren't raving about LBJ either. HW Bush is the standout because he put together a coalition.

It's pretty well known that Obama was pretty insulated and somewhat micromanaged via the NSC.

That's like 2 years out minimally.

No one will ever see this comment, but digging into / discussing the CIA ops around CCP's Rocket Force would be interesting. Sure seems like the CIA burned a few of their sources to cause a bit a chaos and make Xi turn the military upside down. This must have slowed this down by at least 1 year on Taiwan invasion plans.

It really comes down to Japan and how involved they get. And, to a lesser extent Korea (they need to focus resources on the North). Australia will pitch in, but they just don't have the resources yet.
