  1. Yikes, that's very unusual if a reputable bank did that. Usually, banks will use the stock as collateral for the loan. And, will ask for more capital if the stock price falls to a certain point. The commenter is talking about a strategy called "short sale against the box". Normal investors aren't allowed to do this due to tax purposes (can do only in a 1 calendar year without tax implications). Masayoshi Son used a more complex strategy to liquidate / protect value via options to sell his BABA stake.
