Even if South India was dirt poor and completely, completely dependent on North, we would most likely still be super proud of our OG identity and history. This has nothing to do with our economic or industrial success AT ALL. Trust me, except the nerds, netizens and other educated people, an average Tamil doesn't even know what economic accomplishments his state has achieved but you'll still see him acting all haughty about the fact that he's Tamil.
The constitution literally says "India is a union of states whose ethnic and linguistic identity will be preserved by the Union government."
Slightly paraphrased, of course.
