I believe it's origional primary role was to kill masses of soviet tanks with a lot of Maverick missiles, while also having a gun to shoot down the helicopters that were providing cover for the tanks. In a pinch, the gun can be used for ground targets, though pilots always have said the missiles had a better kill ratio by far.
