Swiss military: "We need a light machine gun, a submachine gun, a grenade launcher, an assault rifle, and a sniper rifle. What guns can you come up with?" SIG: the STG57

I believe the plan is to initially only field 20,000 rifles to gather long term maintenance and feedback data, and then produce an A1 and produce the rest in that model

We shot some of those m576 rounds. The spread is crazy, like 2 feet at 15 yards

We were on a roof in Mamudiya and one of my team leaders shot his 203 towards an alleyway across the street. It hit a powerline about 20 feet in front of us and detonated. In shock, I asked everyone if I was bleeding. Luckily, nobody got hurt. Scared the shit out of us.

@Handles-Suck-YouTube You got that right. Being scared shitless was quite often a daily occurrence for me that year
27
Right? Love the rate of fire
25
@therideneverends1697 I carried an m249 in the invasion in 2003. There's a couple of things a gunner needs to know that are parculiar to the gun, but it's pretty easy to keep running. My only complaint was the weight of the gun itself. I could never understand why it needed to have so much steel to shoot 5.56 when our ARs were alluminum. If it was 10 pounds instead of 17, it'd be good to go.
21
@sueeades6900 That's called reductio absurdum. We could go the other way and just say "why not issue everyone a 338 LM and 2 magazines, since bigger is better?" Guys who talk like this have never been a combat soldier. Anyone carrying this will have a hard time laying down enough fire, let alone carry enough mortar rounds, belts if ammo for the GPMG, Javelin or AT4 rounds, grenades, Claymores, or any of the other ungodly heavy loads we carry.
20
@klunkeflunken What? That's not true at all. We always had ammo left after qualification because it was so easy to hit with. The M60 was accurate. They just were worn out by the 90s with so many rounds through them. They're still great guns, today, in the M60E6.
18
Brotato Chip The US Army has never used the SMAW. That's a Marine corps weapon only. The 84mm M136 replaced the LAW. The 84mm M2 replaced the M67 90mm. We also have used the M141 SMAW-D in Afghanistan. Ranger regiment have been using the M2 CG for decades. Regular line infantry companies began using them in Afghanistan years ago. We were using them in the 101st on my deployment there in 2012.
17
@zbigniewgurak8261 I guarantee 100% this will not replace 5.56, and will at best replace the 7.62 weapons. Maybe we will get a version of the Spear LT for everyone who doesn't need a 14 pound boat anchor
16
@Handles-Suck-YouTube Holy shit, that's terrifying
12
I imagine this is a gang weapon. You pull it out when you are going to jump some guys, ala gangs of new york
11
@ChiTownGuerrilla My experience was in Iraq
10
@klunkeflunken I'm not certain that's true at all. Where did you get that idea from ?
10
I agree. I prefer the American guns, but I like the comparison
10
@dominuslogik484 300 BLK subsonic will go straight through a telephone pole. How much penetration do you need?
9
@brittakriep2938 Yeah I think it's a weapon for jumping people
9
I love it when a plan comes together
9
Yep. I don't see that fire control optic by vortex being general issue, either. Too heavy and too expensive. It does look appealing for placing in the M250 machine gun, though.
8
It's a standard skill level 1 task for every infantryman. It's an EIB task
8
FINNISH HIM!!!
5
@leadcounsel4869 It was always my honor to be there for my fellow soldiers. That's who I served. I was in 3rd ID all 3 of my deployments to Iraq, my last being in 07. I was in 1-327 for 2 in Afg. Above the rest!
5
The marines will have test the "accuracy over volume of fire" theory when they encounter near ambushes.
5
@Stinger420 Yeah, I meant 1940's
5
How was it like an ar15? What design component is similar?
4
@sergecashman4822 We have them. Thousands of brand new HK G28s. I have 3 in my platoon. There's plenty of capability to just modernize the M4A1. New rail, new sights, and new trigger. We don't need everyone shooting cyclic and we don't need everyone to hit at long range. It's all about balance. Light, short carbines for short range allowing individual riflemen to carry extra ammo for the squad's GPMG and AT weapons. There's no need for long range rifle fire.
4
@ashley587 The Russians never fielded a battle rifle at all. That was a much wiser choice. So was NATO switching to 5.56 and 7.62. They compliment each other perfectly in a rifle platoon, just as the Russians use 5.45x39 and 7.62x54R. There are no armies Fielding anything like 280 British fir a reason. It does nothing very well. Too large for an assault rifle, too slow for a GPMG.
4
I've always wished HK would release this in a caliber like 9mm or 357 SIG, as well.
4
Ken Hackathorn has no combat experience. He was never in combat and got out of the Ohio National Guard as a private. He's a pathological liar.
4
We don't need long range rifles generally issued to soldiers in Afghanistan. No AK is going to hit you at long range. The only small arms that the Afghans are using on us past 600 meters are PK's, and they struggle to hit anyone with those at all. We answer those fires with our own M240's and 60mm mortars, not with rifles. Note that the the majority of long range engagements with insurgents in AFG result in no casualties, and that the majority of engagements that DO result in casualtues are withing 300 meters. The only people asking for long range abilities for the average riflemen are those who've never been in fights in those mountains. Without a long range optic, having a round with that capability is absolutely useless and is just extra weight. Save the weight on the rifle and have the soldiers carry ammo for the mortars, mg's, and the Gustav.
4
@Horgler The ergos aren't great, but it's very controllable and 45 hits harder. In the 1949s, I'd much rather carry one than an MP40 or PPsH
4
ACR is a great rifle!
4
@Homie-cide The M855A1, which we have used solely for the last decade, reliably fragments from an M4 out past 300 meters. At combat distances, it will begin to fragment within 2 inches into a body.
3
@sergecashman4822 I have absolutely no clue how someone would come to that conclusion
3
@ashley587 What caliber was I using in my M24? Curious
3
@marks_sparks1 I think he said the grenade itself detonated in the tube, not that it fired out of battery
3
Vietnam was the peak of this weapon. Seemed like they were everywhere and on anything. Very versatile, reliable, and powerful.
3
Ah yes, I forgot the m11. Eugene stoner was a German? I had no idea. I thought he was an American, and that the AR10, and the AR15 were American design. Isn't the m240 and m249 Belgian designs based on the browning .30 cal, along with the MA Duece. The beretta and Benelli are Italian, missberg is American. Can't really think of many Dutch or German guns there.
2
I was an M60 gunner in the 90s and loved that gun
2
Today, the mk19 would fullfil this same role
2
@dominuslogik484 What does substantial penetration mean, though? In what way would it matter? It doesn't penetrate soft armor, but zooms through flesh like a pencil. Same with 300 BLK. There's very little difference between the two. 9x39 wont penetrate anything better than 300 BLK. I'd much rather have 300 BLK, as it's fired from a common AR-15 and fired from standard magazines. 300 massively outperforms 9x39, as it can also fire very effective supersonic rounds with a mag swap.
2
The ammo isn't really that much lighter, only about 10%. It's really the gun weight that will be appreciated the most. A suppressed M250 with the advanced optic and 50 rounds weighs the same as stripped M249. That's going to help those guns move fast. Ammo burden can be shared by the squad. I still think most guys need something like the Spear LT in 5.56.
2
@robincray116 I don't think so
2
@sergecashman4822 I absolutely consider 7.62 MG ammo heavy, if you're going to carry any amount worth it. An attached gun team usually hauled 1200 rounds. That's 72 pounds of linked ammo. The 6.8 will drop that down to about 65 pounds. The most logical decision would be to a rifle tm/gun team configured squad. The gun team carries all 6.8 M5s, supporting the M250 GPMG The rifle team gets issued 11.5 " barreled 5.56 Spear LTs and carries the Gustaf. Seems like a logical mix of lightweight close combat carbines, organic light AT, a fully crewed lightweight GPMG, and DMRs capable of firing the same ammo as the MG.
2
@sergecashman4822 I dunno. The short stroke AR-18 derivative is practically every new gun for the last 40 years. I doubt they will fade away
2
@sergecashman4822 Because the AR-18 is a terrific design. Why would anyone get offended that gun companies are still designing weapons around it?
2
Not anymore
2
We like BOTH and use both
2
The problem was always the price. If it had cost less or equal to the price of an M4 or handgun, it would have been a favorable option. Instead, it's twice as much
