Wow. What a reductionist viewpoint. What makes you think a "foreigner" couldn't understand the "magic" of this dish? Because judging from your handle, YOU would be considered a "foreigner" as well.

Find a good sushi restaurant around where you live, a place that has a chef trained in Japan. When you go there, sit at the sushi bar, not a table. Then just tell the chef, "I don't know much about sushi. What do you recommend?" He'll suggest various things. Just follow his lead. That's how I learned! :)

Ceviche isn't raw, though. :)

@fridavalero Oh, I've had ceviche many times. But technically, it's not raw. The citrus juices cook it. Learned that from a chef friend.

Who's "we"?

Hm. Let's talk about the squid-flavored hamburger buns that are served in Japan...

I've wanted to slap people who call all those weird concoctions "gazpacho". NO. Gazpacho is made with TOMATOES. Some bell pepper, a little fried bread, garlic, and vinegar, then BLENDED to make a DRINK. Which is what gazpacho is, not some chopped salad salsa looking stuff! >:(

I'm in agreement with their wanting to taste just the natural food. I've never been big on salting or spicing my food because I like the way things taste on their own. Everyone tells me I'm weird, though I think they're burying the taste of the real food with all that salt and sugar.

The cream cheese would completely freak them out. That is just so wrong as far as real sushi goes. There's never ANY dairy anywhere near real sushi.

Um, excuse me? I live in California, and I can tell you we take GREAT pride in our cooking. For gods' sakes, the whole healthy food revolution CAME from California. Maybe next time don't assume people aren't proud of their cooking just because you don't hear them go on and on about it all day.

Why does everyone piss on the California roll? What's wrong with it? Crab, avocado, rice, nori. What is so awful about that? Sure, it's not authentic, but neither is any other roll that has more than one ingredient in with the rice.

I agree. It's a little high- handed to get on Americans for adapting cuisines when pretty much EVERYONE does it. The Japanese are the masters of appropriating all kinds of things for their own, so I find it a little odd that folks from there would scratch their heads at anyone else doing it.
