That's the great thing about real books - nobody can delete them from your library. REAL THINGS, people. Nothing beats real things.

That "whole language learning" is insane. Idiotic thinking. No, kids do not "naturally" read. It's a SKILL. It takes PRACTICE and DISCIPLINE. You can't just suddenly spell correctly, or be able to read. Thank the gods I went to schools that believed in the kind of training that got me reading voraciously, and I've never stopped. I'm flabbergasted at how utterly stupid kids are these days about language, ideas, the world. And it's all because they don't read. It's no wonder our world is falling apart when no one actually KNOWS anything anymore.

@anglicanmarians6845 That's a lack of creativity. Besides, we have LIBRARIES. Try visiting one sometime.

When I gave my nephew a copy of "The Hobbit", my sister protested that he wouldn't be able to read it because it wasn't "at his level". He was TEN YEARS OLD. Exactly the age the book was written for! I was flabbergasted. It's so depressing how reading is falling away, and how parents are actually encouraging this attitude that kids can't read. They don't WANT to read because they're being told they CAN'T.

@Hard-R-Energy Another good reason to buy used books.

@MR-pr8tp I take it you've never heard of inter-library loans. Maybe try actually visiting a library before making pronouncements about what they provide.
4
@encycl07pedia- You realize you can LOSE your entire library on that little card, right? And way more easily than I could lose my entire library. Please grow up.
4
@no.1fan156 Oh, I find them amusing. They're the same "people" (I use quotes because doubtless some of them are bots) who'll whine and cry when their little toys get bricked or they lose their content to some company going out of business or deciding to yank their stuff. A real book is not only a pleasure, it can become a beloved friend, something these commenters will never understand. There's nothing like being surrounded by all those worlds waiting to be explored. Thanks for the reply! It's always nice to run into another bibliophile. :D

"And we promise we'll never ever change them."

There's a very simple solution to all those stupid toys that yell for your attention: TURN THEM OFF. You're not being forced to have those things yelling at you. It's YOUR choice to be distracted. Get rid of what's distracting you. TURN. THEM. OFF.
3
@letmeeeentertainyou Absolutely. Plus cash preserves your privacy. :)
3
@zantas-handle That's your opinion. Maybe think about why your feelings get hurt so easily over an internet comment.
3
@vivian5361 Being selective is the answer. Also, LIBRARIES. How is it y'all don't use libraries??
3
@vivian5361 Nope, I refuse to believe that UK libraries don't have non-fiction books. That's nonsense. Try harder next time.
3
@oneoflokis Yeah, he did. He would come over to my house and read it here. Now and then he'd ask me to explain something, but he was certainly able to read it. Kids will rise to the level of expectations, so long as those expectations aren't unreasonable. :)
3
@SFDestiny It's a term that's become a thing in the last 15 years or so. It refers to kids' books that have are long enough to be split into chapters. "Little House on the Prairie" as opposed to "Where the Wild Things Are."
3
@CordeliaAurora Well, seems like no one ever brings it up. Nowhere in this video does he ever even mention turning the damn things off. It's like y'all think they're growing off your bodies or something. Don't blame me if you're so dam addicted that you can't stand even a second without your little drug toys.
2
@CordeliaAurora Well, no one ever seems to think of it. This video doesn't mention turning them off even once. Y'all act as if the dam things grow out of your body.
2
@EssensOrAccidens LOL, as if you couldn't lose everything you had just by dropping your silly little phone down a sewer grate.
2
@boojersey13 And yet I've never had any of those things happen in my 64 years, but I've seen data breaches and people lose their phones and tablets and Amazon decide to yank things people "bought". I've only ever known one person whose house burned down, and one whose house was burglarized. So you do you. I'm going to keep my stuff, which on top of being harder to steal (try stealing an entire library) are also filled with my life's memories. You keep going with your little toy though, if it makes you feel better. LIFE IS NOT GUARANTEED, no matter what you own.
2
@vivian5361 I'm sorry, but I flat out do not believe that libraries in the UK have no non-fiction. That's bullshit, boy. Come up with something better.
2
@encycl07pedia- LOL, keep digging, little boy. I'm sure you'll get to China eventually. (And try not to make assumptions about what other people know or don't know. I was backing up my files when you were in diapers.)
2
@discobunny4eva759 Better hope we don't end up with those pretty soon. We're certainly on our way there already.
2
@no.1fan156 Such are the ways of the Teacher Troll.
2
@anglicanmarians6845 You're the one whining about a lack of space. Seems obvious you never use a library. NICE TRY, THOUGH.
2
@encycl07pedia- The fact that you ignore the whole point of the comment and fixate on the one detail you can nitpick in order to convince yourself of your superiority just proves the same about you.
2
@encycl07pedia- Best let go of those little raisins, Sparky. Gangrene down there is no fun at all.
2
@no.1fan156 He's trying to show off the fact that the plural of "medium" is "media". Which usage no one uses anymore. But hey, it makes him feel like a Big Man to nitpick without responding to the actual comment.
2
@encycl07pedia- Ooooo. Somebody's feeling threatened!
2
@encycl07pedia- Christ on a cracker, you are tiresome beyond belief.
2
@rickmel-q7m And? If you're going to design your whole life around the tiny chance of something that maybe MIGHT happen, you're going to end up living in a box. What a timid way of looking at the world, never having or doing anything you want because OMG I MIGHT CATCH ON FIRE. Sad.
2
@meggo329 Awwww. It's so cute how thoroughly you techbros cling to your little toys, as if they're going to last forever. Did your mama hit you with a book when you were three?
2
And you won't have to pay a cent!
2
@JoeKing69 See, what's sad is that a book a week used to be unremarkable. Most readers could pull that off. I used to read that much, and I didn't consider myself a fast reader. I knew a lot of people who could read faster than that, and did. It's why so many people had lots of books in their homes, and why libraries were so full of books whereas now they hardly have any in comparison.
2
@BirdieBlrrrd Um, sitting still and reading all day never hurt anyone, dude. Just because your hyperactive ass can't stay in one spot for more than three minutes doesn't mean calm and concentration are somehow unhealthy.
2
@discobunny4eva759 Good for you, you've read at least one book.
