@Tolohtony LOL. Spoken like a monolingual. You have no idea what English is missing because you don't know any other languages. That's the problem with being monolithic in anything - you have no way of knowing whether what you're missing is necessary or not. :D:D:D

@Tolohtony Funny, that happens to me quite a lot when I'm speaking English. I often realize I can't say what I'm trying to say because although it can be said in Spanish, there's no way to say it in English. I used to work doing written translations, and I can't count the number of times I was frustrated beyond belief because for some damn reason, English just DIDN'T HAVE THE WORDS. For a language that has more words than any other, it really is shocking just how much is not expressable in it. There are areas of thought, attitudes about life, that English simply isn't interested in, and thus the gaps. But unless you actually speak another language, you won't know what the gaps are, because the ideas aren't there.

@Tolohtony I settled for an inferior translation, of course. As to learning, that's up to you. Do you want to learn another language?

@Tolohtony Sometimes it's that you just can't get the exact words, and sometimes it's that you can't say it at all. There was one poem I translated by Becquer, very beautiful but it got more and more abstract as it went along until it got to a point where it couldn't be translated. I had to step back, envision in my mind what he was trying to say, and then describe it in English. It was strange, but that happens. A language isn't just a set of words - it's literally a map of the world, and with each language you acquire, you lay another map of the world on top of the map you already have. Thus new features in the landscape appear that you could never see before, because you were limited to the shape of the world your map showed you. I can't really explain it better than that. It's something that can only be understood by learning another tongue and acquiring the mindset that comes with the words.

Nah, that's not societally approved anymore. To the point where a lot of "concerned" white Americans are trying to force other languages to adopt this new infatuation with "neutral language".
