  10. Costner's presence in Robin Hood is a classic example of the kind of Hollywood machinations that viewers either don't know about or tend to downplay. He didn't want to make that movie, and he only did it as a trade-off to get Dances with Wolves, his pet project, made. He was riding high at the time, and the studio for some godforsaken reason thought it would be a sure hit. Costner swallowed his pride and did the thing, and has taken the brunt ever since. But hey, it gave us that amazing performance by Alan Rickman, so it balances out in the end.

  11. Well, that's what makes a drama, dude - dramatic scenes. Tolkien himself said his books were "peculiarly" unfilmable, and he was right. They simply do not work as he wrote them. Jackson made his own choices (and I don't agree with all of them), but by and large he knew what he was doing, and it turned out about 1000x better than it could have. Fancy Cher as Aragorn? Or the Fellowship carrying "food concentrate" instead of lembas? How about Arwen being raped on a stone altar? All of these have appeared as possibilities in the past. Be glad we can quibble over things like sword forging dates, and not whether Sam really should have murdered Gollum in order to give Frodo a reason to kill him before throwing himself into the volcano!

  13. It's never possible to film a book as written, and this kind of cutting down happens with every book that's adapted to film. Doesn't matter who makes the film, how great they are, that book's going to get whacked down, and purists are going to piss their pants with the tantrums. But if any of them had half a billion dollars and made their own version, all the OTHER purists would piss on THEIR heads, because of course the film wouldn't live up to their expectations.

  14. A Scanner Darkly. Besides having a sharp, funny script, the painterly visual effect very quickly stops being an artsy affectation and becomes the way you would see all this if you were very, very stoned. Which is the whole point, of course. Surveillance technology, brain-twisting designer drugs, and loss of human individuality - it's classic Phllip K. Dick. (Robert Downy Jr and Woody Harrelson are hilarious as a pair of stoned housemates.) Oh, and nice to see A Boy and His Dog get some needed love.

  19. Johnny Smith was anything but unhinged. He was one of only a couple of performances in which Walken played an ordinary person who wasn't particularly weird. (Although he did have some interesting verbal rhythms.) It's one of the reasons I love The Dead Zone, the way Walken embroiders just around the edges of a quiet, decent man.

  20. "Aquarius" from Milos Forman's "Hair". I've rarely seen a choreographer's work match its subject matter so perfectly as Twyla Tharp's does the hippie subjects of the film. P.S. Rocky Horror has been in theaters for FOURTY YEARS. Think about that.

  21. I worked at several tech companies in the early 90's, and nobody - I mean NOBODY - had a good word for Steve Jobs. He was universally viewed as an arrogant jackass. His ugly treatment of his daughter didn't surprise me at all when I heard about it. I'd have been surprised if he hadn't behaved that way.

  25. Yes, he's fine in the book, but on film he'd have been a tiresome, one-dimensional Hestonite, all lantern jaw and endless soliloquys. (I can just imagine the others chucking things at him on the third go round of "There be the Great Stone of Eldonphalen, where my ancestors, from whence I have my blood...") Many of Tolkien's characters were based on mythic archetypes rather than real people, and it really shows. Such characters just aren't acceptable today - the audiences would have grown tired of Aragorn long before the sixth hour of the trilogy. Just as they had to soften Boromir's racist stance and beef up Legolas's woefully thin part, Aragorn had to be made more real to a modern audience. That's just how it works when you make movies you'd like other people to pay money to see.

  26. RigoStar Mm, there was a lot of anticipation for Jurassic Park, actually.  Spielberg was riding a long wave at the time, so anything he did had people on tenterhooks.  Certainly nobody expected that it would be so completely excellent, but it wasn't a surprise when it turned out that way.

  28. For all that Mojo claims its lists cover "all genres", it's actually a very limited list. Mostly stuff techie geek boys would like, with maybe something else thrown in. Lots of superhero movies, almost no movies about families or personal tragedies. An occasional reference to Woody Allen for the slightly more sophisticated, perhaps a shoutout to Pixar for those who like animation or kids' films. Very few foreign movies except for Bergman or Kurosawa. Likewise, very few "classic" films other than the ones that always show up on Best Ever lists like Citizen Kane or Casablanca. Really, these are lists for dilettantes who know very little about film and thus will be impressed, thinking WOW THEY KNOW MOVIES. Laughable, really.

  29. I've always thought that Legend would have been just as beautiful if no one had uttered a word. Think about it - a fantasy film that is more a ballet than a play, in that words are not used. So much of the film relies on our memories of fairy tales, anyway, and it's not as if the film adds that much to the stories we all know. It would be a cool experiment to take the dialogue out of the soundtrack and see how well it works.

  31. One of the very few things about this trilogy that pisses me off is the death of Denethor. Jackson turned a Shakespearean self-immolation, complete with thunderous oration, and turned it into a stupid cartoon ending no more dignified than a clown's. The audience was robbed of a great death scene because the effects guys were bored.

  32. Personally, I always thought that was one of the more unbelievable things in the books. A bookish hobbit who's never been outside his own little country and never in his life even picked up a sword suddenly becomes a fierce warrior? LOL, give me a break. Things that look good on the page can become completely ridiculous on the screen, and nobody would have bought Frodo becoming some fierce guy when he'd clearly never done anything more serious than learning Elvish and running from the local farmer's dogs.

  37. That duet always makes me laugh. Watching Misha try to do jazz dancing - it's so sweet, the effort he makes. But he can't even come close to Hines. Of course, Hines wouldn't be able to do a lick of ballet, so it all evens out. :)

  39. Um, Merry and Pippin WERE silly hobbits at the beginning of the books. And Pippin DID keep doing stupid things that put the Fellowship in jeopardy in the books. And Jackson DID make them braver in the films as time went on and they encountered dangers. JUST LIKE THE BOOKS. In fact, I'm wondering what movies you were watching that you could think they were somehow different from the books.

  41. The reason "Singin' in the Rain" looks easy is because it is easy. It's not a complicated or difficult dance; Gene Kelly himself said it was a simple thing. It's just that the song and the setting, with the rain and splashing and the joy he put into it, make the number unique and unforgettable. But it's not a hard dance to learn at all.

The ending to that episode tore me up - Diane skips away up the stairs while Sam watches her and murmurs, "Have a good life", and then you see an alternate future where they've grown old together, and Sam walks over to her in their living room, takes her in his arms, and they start to dance. OMG KILLS ME JUST THINKING ABOUT IT.

  46. Funny thing is, that's not what it is in the book. Make Room, Make Room! by Harry Harrison was solely about the horrors of overpopulation. Soylent green was exactly what it sounds like - soybeans and lentils processed into a pure protein foodstuff. The people thing was tacked onto it for the movie because it was felt the real ending was just depressing as hell. Which it was, for sure.

  47. Also, The World Sinks Except Japan. Great satire of disaster movies (mainly Japan Sinks), it takes its premise - that Japan is the only landmass to survive, um, something very large, so now all the remnants of the world are clamoring to get into the country - as an invitation to a lot of topical social humor about the country. So not quite the end of the world, but obviously it's going to be soon, no matter what anyone tells themselves.
