Costner's presence in Robin Hood is a classic example of the kind of Hollywood machinations that viewers either don't know about or tend to downplay. He didn't want to make that movie, and he only did it as a trade-off to get Dances with Wolves, his pet project, made. He was riding high at the time, and the studio for some godforsaken reason thought it would be a sure hit. Costner swallowed his pride and did the thing, and has taken the brunt ever since. But hey, it gave us that amazing performance by Alan Rickman, so it balances out in the end.
