The reason Orwell titled the book "Nineteen Eighty-Four" and NOT "1984" was that he was very adamant that people not take the book as a prediction, but as a warning. And he was right. The book got reprinted with "1984" as the title, and when the year came and went, everybody heaved a big sigh of relief and decided the danger was over. Big big big mistake.

And in the process saw horrors on both sides. It cured him of his political naivete.

@oeokosko Yeah, I know that. It's why he didn't write the title as a date but rather as text. The date didn't matter at all. It could come at any time, anywhere. That was the point.

@LeonC0704 Read my comment again. The numbers made people see it as a date rather than a title. That made all the difference in how people viewed the story: as a prediction rather than a warning.
