There's no reason to stop viewing it that way. Religious and mythological stories get reinterpreted to fit every age. That's a big part of what keeps them relevant.

LOL, sometimes. What do you think the centuries of hatred and bloodshed between Catholics and Protestants was all about? Hell, some of that is still going on.

Therein lies the problem of extremely correct interpretations of religious or mythological stories: they lose any effect or meaning on later readers who are not "insiders". This story is usually used as a lesson against prejudice of others different from the reader. But if we try to limit the meaning to a story about Jewish people and their infighting, then where is the lesson for anyone else? This kind of factual correction cuts away any applicability to others. When the religion becomes completely composed of non-Jews, the point of the story being about a specific religious hierarchy divorces it from any relevance to people who are not in that community. It goes from "everybody stop being dicks to each other!" to "Jews had a problem with their social circles interacting." More technically correct, but far less applicable to a congregation who do not in any way count themselves as Jews.

@janerkenbrack3373 Again, sometimes. You're speaking for others without knowing what you're talking about.

@CB66941 Doubtful since "Christian" was a concept that wouldn't exist for another century at the very least.
