  2. People misinterpret the French's attitude all the time. Americans expect smiles and interest from people, and don't realize that the French just don't operate that way. Their attitude towards smiling is that it's a sign of weakness, so anyone who does it all the time is someone to be looked down on for their lack of fortitude. It's not that the French aren't decent people, it's just that Americans are throwing exactly the wrong signals if they want to be respected. Remember that story about the woman who kept smiling at the gorilla in the zoo, only to be attacked violently when the vastly insulted gorilla finally got a chance to escape? It's kinda like that - we think we're being "nice", and they see an idiot who doesn't know how comport themselves publicly.
