  1. As they say, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Back in the early 90's, I worked temp jobs at several tech companies in Scotts Valley, including Borland. Everyone I heard mention Steve Jobs' name hated, hated, HATED that jerk. NO ONE had a good word for him. He was a narcissistic, abusive jerk even back then, and he only got worse. Hardly surprising the company he ran roughshod in would take after him, as company culture spreads from the top down, so gaslighting? Absolutely typical. Not the least bit shocking, in fact, I'd have been surprised if Apple wasn't like that. That's what you get from a second-rate salesman who took his own acid trips way too seriously, who had cute ideas then bullied and browbeat everyone around him into doing all the work while he took all the credit. What's sad is that it hasn't changed at all.

  11. Put quotes around "temps". People who get hired for a month and end up being there for years while still being treated as temporary are not really temps. I know, I used to do that kind of work, and I always refused any job that didn't have a solid end date, unless the agency required a signed contract stating that after the end date, I would be hired as an employee. Otherwise, fuck that noise. I knew a scam when I saw one.

  16. It's actually the law. Legally, corporations CANNOT prioritize customers. They MUST maximize profits for shareholders. That's the focus. Even if by some wild chance, a CEO actually wanted to prioritize customers, they legally can't do it. It's astonishing how many Americans don't know that.

  17. Yep. When I need an appliance, I go to my neighborhood shop that refurbishes older models. Always good stuff that lasts much longer than the new ones. I've had my current fridge for ten years, and it's doing fine. My stove I've had for 15 years, with an occasional service visit to recalibrate the oven about every six years.

  23. I bought a Canon printer in 2010 for $50. Still works just fine. The cartridges aren't that cheap, but like you, I hardly print at all. So it's a win-win for me.

  25. This is why so many of us didn't want weed legalized. We wanted it decriminalized. That would have made it available but would have prevented this corproate bullshit from ruining things. California, where I live, was the FIRST STATE to decriminalize weed back in the 70's. Guess what? NO corporate movement. All that happened is the cops couldn't arrest you for having weed anymore. THAT is what should have happened, but we can't have nice things, because some asshole ALWAYS wants to get rich off them.

  33. So many of those things can be done without a smartphone or any of the shiny little new toys. If you're going to insist on making your life revolve around this tech stuff, you're going to give the companies free rein to rope you into these subscriptions. Do you really need a tech gadget to water your plants, for instance? Is it really such an awful experience to get off your ass and go to the store? Or to a restaurant to get your food, or even eat there? Is it really so awful to have actual THINGS in your house? Seriously, a huge amount of this problem can be laid at the feet of the choices people are making now. You don't want to buy anything, but you still want to have it. Well, then it's your choice to get shafted when you decide to rent it. Sorry, no sympathy here.
