When you buy an actual book, the publishing company can't suddenly decide to walk in and snatch it out of your hands. This bizarre allergy to actually owning anything is putting people in this position. Is a blank, soulless house really worth all this trouble?

@mightymight365 LOL. It's hilarious how many people nowadays equate owning things with "hoarding". You've clearly never seen a hoarder's house.

I've had my Canon printer for nearly 15 years now. It's still fine.

@mightymight365 Right. So that means anybody that hangs onto last week's newspaper has "hoarding tendencies". You know what you sound like? One of those alcoholics that thinks just because he can't handle liquor, it means everyone who has a beer needs to be in AA. Keeping things is natural. You need to tell the difference between normal life and lunatic extremes.

Well, when people keep whining about how awful it is to own anything, this is where y'all end up.

@NBDave-l3m How about you don't buy it. Not everyone is allergic to physical objects.

Yep. When I need an appliance, I go to my neighborhood shop that refurbishes older models. Always good stuff that lasts much longer than the new ones. I've had my current fridge for ten years, and it's doing fine. My stove I've had for 15 years, with an occasional service visit to recalibrate the oven about every six years.

I bought a Canon printer in 2010 for $50. Still works just fine. The cartridges aren't that cheap, but like you, I hardly print at all. So it's a win-win for me.

LOL, paranoia.

@goatmr2 Or you could just stick to devices that don't do any of that in the first place.

@yetanotherbloke Unless you want to watch football games, there's no reason to have a TV anymore.

So many of those things can be done without a smartphone or any of the shiny little new toys. If you're going to insist on making your life revolve around this tech stuff, you're going to give the companies free rein to rope you into these subscriptions. Do you really need a tech gadget to water your plants, for instance? Is it really such an awful experience to get off your ass and go to the store? Or to a restaurant to get your food, or even eat there? Is it really so awful to have actual THINGS in your house? Seriously, a huge amount of this problem can be laid at the feet of the choices people are making now. You don't want to buy anything, but you still want to have it. Well, then it's your choice to get shafted when you decide to rent it. Sorry, no sympathy here.
