  4. As a kid in the late 60's, my favorite toy was my set of Klik-Klaks (the name I knew Klakkers by). GODS, I loved those things. I think the attraction was the ability to slam out my frustrations and unhappiness. I loved to stand there slamming those things together, enjoying the sound, the glittery flashes of light, and the sense of being able to do something VIOLENT without being punished, screamed at, or beaten. I don't doubt there were other kids vicariously getting revenge on their lives by flinging those things together.

Considering that the episodes are set in a judicial system that may or may not resemble our own, and that we have no idea how they do or don't other than the narrow examples we see onscreen, I don't know how well a US lawyer would be able to judge their "accuracy". The only thing he could do is compare the cases to the system we have now, and that would be speculative at best. It'd be an interesting exercise, but wouldn't tell us much more than whether things have changed much in that future.

  9. The president is angling to find a way to silence private speech. That is something to take very seriously whether or not he can actually do it. The fact that he wants to do it and is trying to do it can have its own ramifications aside from the eventual result.

  14. You know what argument I'm sick of? The argument that STEM subjects are the only thing that will save humanity, and that anything else isn't worth studying. Meanwhile, our curricula is bereft of subjects like history, civics, the arts - everything that's about HOW WE ARE HUMAN. We're being pushed to concentrate only on the mechanical and not at all on the living, breathing subjects that teach us how to understand each other, how to expand our thinking beyond our own personal borders, how to be citizens of the wider world. Our kids are being pushed into training to be cogs in the techbro machine. It's the 21st century version of the "train for the assembly line" mentality of schooling. And we wonder how we end up with a population that can't avoid being duped by foreign enemies. It's disheartening and pathetic.

We're going to get to the point where no one will be able to originate anything because somebody somewhere will be able to claim they thought of it first. What started out as a way to protect the freedom of artists is becoming a way to deny artists their freedom to create. That's what you get when you let big corporations dictate the way we run our society.

  20. I think disbarment is only for things that affect the practice of law, like gross misconduct in the performance of their job. Although I've heard of lawyers getting disbarred because they did something outside the courtroom that was so heinous it would affect the reputation of the law, I don't think yelling racist asshattery would be enough. (I could be wrong, of course.)

The one in Star Trek is purely fictional, and even though it kind of resembles ours, there's no canon to tell us whether the depiction is "accurate". Like I said, the only thing we can say about it is how it compares to our system, which does exist, and even then, we can only say that about the bits that we can see. That would be interesting, but it's not the same as judging whether the show portrays that legal system well.
