My favorite book, I read it in 1976 when my best friend brought it over and said we had to read it at the same time. Life changing stuff, indeed. Jackson did a great (though not perfect) job, better than any of us had any right to hope for. You know, almost every person involved in the making of it was a fan of the book; that's why it's so lovingly made. (How lovingly? The characters had hand-made underwear. The helmets had engravings on the insides.) It was obsessively artistic, this trilogy. Best ever. And by the way, in defense of Conan the Barbarian and the rest of Howard's books, they were written well before LOTR and have nothing whatsoever to do with Tolkien. The stories originate in the same Northern "age of courage", but they take a very different tack and have a very different philosophy of life. Just sayin'. :)

This looks good. This portrayal actually works as a young version of Gene Wilder's Wonka. (The less said about that horrible Depp portrayal, the better.) This guy has the sparkle that I remember from the original book, the sprightly, squirrel-like quality. Looking forward to it. I might even go see it in a theater.

Honestly, Nate is worthless as a boyfriend. The guy's a sous chef, he works in a restaurant in New York, one of the toughest, most fast-paced and pressurized jobs out there, and he whines at Andy about not having "integrity"? She's doing her job as she should be and he's being a baby about it because she's not around to eat his crappy burnt grilled cheese sandwiches. It's not like she's giving her entire life to this job, after all. It's one year, that's her goal, and he can't hang around long enough to get her through it? And she's aiming to be a journalist, meaning she probably won't be around a lot of the time even when she does get her dream job. He knows that, so it looks to me like he never took her ambitions seriously since the minute she starts to rise in the world, he turned into a todller pouting in the corner. The movie really should have had her move on from him and those hold-you-back "friends" of hers, instead of backtracking like she does. It would have been a much better ending to see her free to go on with her life.

@VastyVastyVoid But they were not looking to ride at speed. In fact, speed would have drawn attention to them. They were travelling for stealth - which is why they didn't ride out with an army, after all.

I liked pretty much everything about the Tim Burton version - EXCEPT Johnny Depp. His portrayal had nothing to do with the guy in the book. He was creepy and weird and had none of the charm and sparkle of the original guy. This one actually looks good.

She told him the truth - he's waiting for another life. That turns out to be accurate. He doesn't become the One until he dies, and then comes back. Oracles always tell the truth; you just have to crack their code.

Louis didn't agree to be a vampire. He was made in 1791, and that was well before the myth of the vampire was common knowledge. To him, what Lestat was offering him was immortality and a way out of pain. He wasn't told that he'd be eating people every night, or I'm pretty sure he'd have turned it down. The actual life of a vampire was something he only found out once he got there, and it really bummed him out that Lestat hadn't told him what he would become. Thus his resentment against Lestat, and his unending depression and guilt. Had he known that the Dark Gift wouldn't solve his problems but only make them worse, he'd have preferred to die. Lestat was made into a vampire against his will ("the choice I never had"), but he dealt with it by rebelling, diving in and getting every bit of enjoyment he could out of his eternal life.

Anton Ego was played by the great Peter O'Toole. "The Stunt Man" is an overlooked gem of his, "My Favorite Year" and "The Lion in Winter" are great. He's one of the generation of great actors that came up post-war in England, along with Richard Burton and Richard Harris.

This is the one and ONLY thing that makes me jealous of Harry Potter fans - the ability to reboot and re-adapt and just keep going forever if they feel like it, because the author is in favor of it. Tolkien fans, on the other hand, get screwed because his son was an ENORMOUS prig who would rather NOBODY EVER had the rights to adapt any of his father's works. His influence is still there, preventing anyone from ever doing ANYTHING again. Now that Amazon f***ed up so royally, due mainly to being unable to adapt the original stories and so having to cobble together some truly AWFUL stuff in order to make bank, it's unlikely anyone will want to fund anything further out of Tolkien. (Those ridiculous Hobbit movies didn't help, either. FEH.)

Aside from the awful reason a sequel didn't happen, I'm fine with it being a standalone film. So many really wonderful films got dragged down because sequels were dragged out of them. This film just is what it is, a Valentine to science fiction TV and fandom and the advantages of having an obsessive interest. It quite simply doesn't need a sequel, as it's beautifully self-contained. Not enough movies get to be unique anymore.

He wasn't the One. Not then. What she said was exactly right. He was waiting for his next life. It wasn't until after he died and came back that he was the One, because it was that experience that gave him the ability to see the code - and that is what made him the One. So she was saying "sorry" because he was right.

Also, there's that moment when they've just arrived, and they're arguing about whether they should be there, and Fred's walking around behind them going, "Wow, the floors are so clean!" Totally something a stoner would say.

I can't remember the first time I saw this film. Probably back in the 70's. Would you believe it was a complete flop when it came out? It was considered too dark and depressing, so much so that when the copyright came up for renewal in the 70's, the studio didn't bother. So it fell into the public domain, and it got picked up by local TV stations as a cheap property to run during the holidays. It slowly started to find its audience, and in the early 80's, stations started running it 24 hours on Christmas Day as a marathon. Then videotapes happened, and it became one of the biggest selling tapes out there, and now of course it's a classic, one of the best of its era. (By the way, that shot at the end where the camera pans over the faces singing Auld Lang Syne is a direct reference to Norman Rockwell's classic Americana art.)
