I've spent the last twenty years acclimating myself to this idea. I'm currently working my way through residual guilt about not "succeeding". Ten minutes with my cat or my dog, though, and I'm fine with not being a CEO. If they don't need a sports car, why would I need one? :)

@papmasterOST All lives are lived. Maybe not the way you'd approve of, but by definition, all lives are lived.

Benjamin Franklin said he was a pessimist because when things turned out badly, he got to say "I told you so"; but when things turned out well, he got a happy surprise! :D

Optimism is what landed this country in the mess it's in now. When optimism becomes bald naivete, you're opening yourself up to all kinds of trouble.

@noobatplay5781 LOL, humans argue about PLENTY of obvious things.

The question, of course, is "'Best version' according to who?"

Neo's predicament is different because of the extremely limited nature of his perception. Morpheus says it himself - "a prison that you cannot smell or taste or touch". There is only sight and sound in the the Matrix, probably because that's the level of complexity it can handle. (It does make me wonder what Neo means when he says, "really good noodles." In what way?) He is limited in other ways, as well, that point to that smallness of perception. His office cubicle is utterly empty - there is not a single thing on that desk or on that wall. He sits there and stares at a blank screen, and only moves when the courier arrives, and that startles him into motion. What was he doing? Was he even conscious? There's so much strangeness around the question of perception in this movie.

Or I could just be really, really REALLY psychotic. A real genius of hallucination. It's not hubris if the gods don't exist, after all.

@cuatesanz5611 You can obtain the same lesson from any cat on the street. :D

@marusero25 Biologically speaking, not quite. You still have to reproduce. THEN your life's purpose has been achieved. Biologically speaking.

Jesus, the privilege dripping off all of this is flabbergasting.

I don't believe that binary thinking is engrained in human beings. There have been cultures that did not perceive the world in binary ways. Western thought has swamped most other ways of thinking, but it is not written in our DNA that we must see the world as either/or.

@harrydickinsider5848 No, I meant bald, as in blatant, unrepentant, arrogant. :)

It's also better to be with people than lament being alone. Contentment is the key, whatever your social sphere. Wishing you were other than you are guarantees unhappiness.
