  2. ​ @ZweiZwolf there a number of drout tolerant and water saving crops that don't need fertile land, many such ag plants are perennials , grape, apricot, almond, watermelon to name a few. The worst at soil is sandy in humid/wet climates (why FL grows pine for wood for instance).

  3. ​ @JS-ih7lu Japan needs to support its farmers, the reason it limits food and in particular fruit imports. China produces reasonably priced fruit and alot of it even in the north.
