Then they pay baristas pennies....

Because in the seventies the US was a manufacturing economy. People with only a high-school diploma could get jobs that didn't even require a high school diploma and made the equivalent of $80,000 a year in today's wages. Those jobs were shipped overseas and were replaced with low paying service sector jobs. So now people with only a high school education have access to nothing but minimum wage jobs.

That's messed up....
1
Lol what? Get a "real" job? So Starbucks is a fake company paying their baristas fake money giving them fake products?
1
Except our manufacturing sector has been obliterated and replaced with low paying service jobs. Plus free college for the poor hasn't been passed. Not even free community college has.
1
Because service sector jobs are the main jobs available now.... When in the 70s it used to be manufacturing....

Having a job is a privilege. Having a living wage while working is a right.
1
@Lord_Humungus well it can be made a right. Just because something didn't exist before doesn't mean it can't exist now.

@Lord_Humungus "learn some skills" as if the economy is an individual problem and there are no systemic factors or problems. After the end of WWII up until about the 1970s the United States had a manufacturing economy. Many jobs that didn't require even a high school degree allowed people with relatively low levels of Education to become middle class. From the 1970s onward those jobs were shipped overseas and replaced with low paying service sector jobs. So now people with relatively the same low levels of Education to have no choice but to take such jobs because you can hardly get a decent job with just a high-school diploma or GED now. Get some skills? Education, employment, and training requires years of commitment and money. Something a MW worker lacks the most. Noone is paying a $30,000/year college tuition making $8/hr. Free college was axed, free community college was axed, even student loan cancellation was axed.

@Lord_Humungus make enough to not only not need welfare like medicaid or food stamps but enough to afford a home. Car. Family. Health insurance. Retirement.
1
@Lord_Humungus you ignored the entire rest of my comment
1
@Lord_Humungus i just did.. Above the poverty line....
1
@Lord_Humungus making $8/hr isn't enough to pay for college now. Obese slobs? Um...you can be both of those things whether you're rich or poor. Again. This country is replete with low wage labor. You can't tell me that 44% of poor people simply don't work or don't work hard enough. Or the 80% of workers live paycheck to paycheck(including millions with college degrees).
1
@miketheyunggod2534 so they do or do not deserve to make more?
1
@miketheyunggod2534 nah. More like $100,000/year.
1
2.7 billion?
1
@motorman1700 I'm amazed he's worth that much but upset over a $15/hr minimum wage.
1
@motorman1700 with what McDonald's Chic fil a and other places make their cashiers should be making $100,000 a year. But i doubt most people want that.
1
Howard is a Ghoul then.
1
Exactly.
1
They make so much money but pay $8-$14....
