Background and Struggles:
I’m 29 years old and have spent 10 years working towards a bachelor’s degree, but I’ve only completed 27 credits. Over the years, I’ve faced many obstacles, including my mom being sick for six years before passing away in 2023. During that time, I had to rely on welfare and Medicaid, but the system didn’t fully support me, especially when it came to caring for my mom. After she passed away, I lost housing and food stamps, which left me homeless and dependent on my dad for support.
Academic Record:
I currently have a 1.1 GPA with 89 attempted credits, 27 completed credits, and 15 transferable credits. I’ve been rejected from scholarships, my financial aid appeal was denied, and I couldn’t get work-study because I wasn’t eligible for financial aid. Right now, my grades are failing: I have a 79 in Brief Calculus, a 69 in Accounting, and a 41 in College Physics I. I’m not planning to study for the physics exam tomorrow and expect to fail it, just like I did on the first exam.
Harsh Reality:
If I don’t get at least Bs or As this semester, I’ll be kicked out of Wake Tech and lose my chance to transfer to NC State. At this point, I don’t feel like continuing school is worth it unless I can afford to do it without struggling financially. I would only continue with my education if I were financially independent.
Decision to Quit:
I’m seriously considering quitting everything related to my degree and education. I don’t want to continue facing poverty and academic failure. I’ve realized that unless I become financially free, I can’t keep pursuing school. I’m also not interested in becoming a screenwriter or journalist if it means quitting school, and I’d rather focus on finding financial stability through other means.
