At 30, after spending 12 years trying to earn a bachelor’s degree, I’m still stuck in a cycle of poverty. I had to rely on welfare and Medicaid while taking care of my sick mom, who was ill for six years before passing away. The stress of it all caused me to flunk out of school and lose my financial aid, and even though I appealed, it was denied.
Losing Section 8 housing, food stamps, and my safety net left me homeless and starving, forced to depend on my dad just to survive. Now, without a car or access to work-study jobs, I can’t continue my education.
Even if I get an associate’s degree, finishing a bachelor’s while still being poor would take over a decade. I feel like I lost both my mom and my 20s for nothing, and getting another supermarket job feels like admitting I’ve made no progress at all.
