Your minimum wage point is an excellent one. I have a theory as to why conservatives oppose raising the minimum wage. It is not because it costs businesses "too much" but because it makes meritocracy a lie. If raising the minimum wage really would lift tens of millions of people out of poverty that is admitting that poverty is a systemic problem, that effort alone is not and cannot be enough to succeed/escape poverty, in essence that means effort doesn't matter. On the other hand telling people to simply work harder or accept the way society is shifting the blame to the individual.

@chrish564 I agree. Unfortunately I find it sad we can subsidize the rich endlessly but not the average Joe or small business(higher wages or less employee turn over).
12
@toronaldaris yep. Poor people need less money to work harder. Where as the rich need more.
11
@chrish564 yes.

It's called just-world fallacy.

Really? That's Making me cry....

@galerae947 good god.
3
@galerae947 to pay off in state tuition in the same time people in the 80s did I would need to make $73/hr.
3
@TheDivayenta would you be upset at these 3 things 1. 100% student loan debt canceling 2. Tuition free public universities and trade schools 3. Additional funding for poor students Let's say poor students could get a loan or grant that covered living expenses.
3
@beigefox6579 get used to it. Just-world fallacy is the cornerstone of republicanism.
3
@beigefox6579 It's about empathy. Conservatives can't relate to people in different circumstances.
3
@thiskiddyahoo yep
3
Now imagine trying to live on 7.25/hr. I make 10/hr

@TheDivayenta I think Republicans believe poor people don't deserve to be middle class or rich so they dismantle policies which accomplish that. Every single Republican in my state has opposed an increase to the minimum wage by even $1.
2
@TheDivayenta I meant all actions have consequences. What consequences we consider "good" or "bad" are choices. We choose to give women voting(action) so whatever consequences we experience as a result are acceptable. We, particularly US politicians and corporations, are unwilling to change their way of life and thinking to accommodate paying all workers $15/hr. So we can have a female vice president, IMO one of the greatest achievements for women in all of human history. And we deem this acceptable. but at the same time, A $15/hr minimum wage is doing "too much." So this tells me we are willing to live in a society where women have freedom, we are NOT willing to live in a society where Noone is poor.

Republicans oppose policies which reduce poverty and create a middle class.

@1SCme billions??
2
@1SCme I know it's billions. I'm just floored by how much money that is.

Bought a house at 19? I'm 27 and I'll never be able to afford housing unless I became a millionaire or billionaire. The average price of homes in my city is $450,000. When grandparents bought a house they paid $12000 when they made $8000 a year. That's 70% of the home price. I'd have to make $315,000/yr now.
2
@barnaclestval correct. I need welfare.
1
@TheDivayenta I wish American politicians thought like you. By the way, I equate poverty to women's suffrage. Poverty is a policy decision, just like giving women the right to vote. If we truly cared about ending poverty then we would suffer any consequence to do so. We suffer consequences when giving women freedom but we have a fundamental belief women deserve autonomy so we are willing to suffer these consequences. We are unwilling to suffer the consequences for ending poverty, therefore we do not truly believe in ending poverty.
1
Conservatives believe in just-world fallacy as much as they believe in God.
1
It's over $5,000/yr now....
