  1. At 30, after spending 10 years trying to earn a bachelor’s degree, I’m stuck in a cycle of poverty. I had to rely on welfare and Medicaid while taking care of my sick mom, who passed away after six years of illness. The stress caused me to flunk out of school and lose my financial aid, and despite the circumstances, my appeal was denied. I lost Section 8 housing, food stamps, and my safety net, leaving me homeless and starving and dependent on my dad to avoid death. Now, without a car or access to work-study jobs, I’m unable to continue my education. Even with an associate's degree, it would take over a decade to finish a bachelor’s while still being poor. I feel like I’ve lost both my mom and my 20s for nothing, and working at a supermarket again feels like admitting I’ve made no progress at all. But politicians ignore poor people like myself.
