The truth of our political values lies in the risks we refuse to accept, and it is a debt-free life, not unaffordable education, that politicians deem unacceptable.

  3. The truth of our politics lies in the prices we are unwilling to pay, the consequences we are unwilling to tolerate, the risks we refuse to accept. We have the capability of making College tuition-free, it is within our power. It is simply not among our priorities.

  5. Because the government wants the rich to have government benefits, not the poor. Without poverty, nobody would be reliant on welfare or debt, no one could be controlled by corporations.

  11. The American economy runs on poverty, or at least the constant threat of it. Americans like their goods cheap and their services plentiful and the two of them, together, require a sprawling labor force willing to work tough jobs at crummy wages. On the right, the barest glimmer of worker power is treated as a policy emergency, and the whip of poverty, not the lure of higher wages, is the appropriate response.

  12. @jackhammer4396  you believe in just-world fallacy because not everyone is capable of becoming a doctor. It isn't just about hard work. In relation to college We know full well that America is full of hardworking people who are kept poor by very low wages and harsh circumstances. We know many who want a job can’t find one, and many of the jobs people can find are cruel in ways that would appall anyone sitting comfortably behind a desk. We know the absence of child care and affordable housing and decent public transit makes work, to say nothing of advancement, impossible for many. We know people lose jobs they value because of mental illness or physical disability or other factors beyond their control. We are not so naïve as to believe near-poverty and joblessness to be a comfortable condition or an attractive choice.

  21. The first could be solved with a minimum-wage hike. Second problem could be solved with the restrictions of financial aid given to colleges. Colleges have to meet certain requirements in order to receive funding from the federal government and also to provide funding to students. One of the requirements could be for universities to charge tuition that's a narrow band around the median price or that's within the price range of lower-income students.

  22. @davidphillips8674  that is the fallacy of relative privation. Just because the situation could be worse doesn't mean it can't be better. So if a police department has a 70% clearance rate, when it was 50% the year before, should the department give up and not try to reach 100? Nonsense.

  27. @DebraJohnson  because it isn't about the costs, but the benefits. The government providing financial assistance for lower and middle classes sets a precedent that poverty is a policy choice. That people don't have to be trapped by debt. Child poverty was cut in half with a stroke of a pen via the EITC, then that extra aid was cut.

The reason college was cheaper was because it was subsidized by the government more. Make college free. So poor people can attend.

Many people believe rich people and business owners have " succeeded " in the " system that works, " so when they make a mistake, they " deserve " to get bailed out due to their success. Whereas poor people have failed, so any government help they receive is a " hand out. "

  38. @jon6309  I understand the odds are against me. As for the not ending up in the right field, that is due to the same reason why student loans exist, lack of money. There isn't enough money poured into STEM. Not just physics. Too many PhD students are produced each year(compared to the number of academic positions available alone).

Since I can only earn minimum wage, it is very difficult to make a living for myself plus go to school. And CC's don't offer health insurance for students either. Without scholarships, I won't be able to finish even CC. With what I dealing with last Spring, even making $75,000/year wouldn't have allowed me to escape poverty/get my degree.

  40. @jon6309  with loans? Because I'm not a millionaire, I can't come up with $30k like that. Anecdotally: Last spring, I was taking 3 different classes at 2 different colleges at once, working as a cashier, being an intern, volunteering, and taking care of my sick mom. CC was still unaffordable for me, even with grants. 1. Financial aid didn't fully cover living expenses, no living wage there. 2. My minimum wage job paid me $10.50/hr. No living wage there. 3. My internship paid me $900/semester, and I was taxed. No living wage there either. And due to regulations, I didn't receive health insurance from those sources either. Or the government.

  42. @jon6309  depressing to hear. I'm no economist, but it seems to me this problem is needlessly complicated. Provide people with enough resources so they're not poor. Simple, but not cheap. But all these barriers exist for government aid for poor citizens that it made me realize the government doesn't want college to be affordable in the first place. 1. The government hasn't passed tuition free community colleges or 4 year universities. 2. Even if the government did do #1, it leaves out private schools. 3. Even if the government did do #1 AND #2, it doesn't extend to living expenses(not fully). 4. Scholarships and grants are not guaranteed and are rarely enough. 5. Full ride scholarships cannot be enough in the amount of awards or number of scholarships- not with 140 million people in poverty, and millions more being middle class.

  50. The government can do that. There are eligibility requirements for universities to be able to receive federal loans. The eligibility can be changed to where universities are forced to charge tuition that's a narrow band around the median price.
