One of the core ideological differences between the left and the right has to do with classism and justice.
I've noticed that the left tends to oppose any policy which treats the poor differently than the rich.
This applies not just to welfare, but criminal justice as well.
The right believes several injustices:
1. Poor people are supposed to prove their character by being willing to expend limitless effort for minimal returns, but property owners ask, in the same breath, how there can be literally any growth, innovation, or progress if their potential rewards aren't limitless. Like, just a lot isn't sufficient incentive for a rich person to contribute. It has to be everything. But if a poor person holds out for a living wage, they're just a bad and greedy person.
2. the pundits I've seen on the news have been saying for years that if minimum wage jobs don't pay enough, that's the fault of the workers for staying in those jobs. If they were good workers, they would either be readily rewarded with higher wages, freely given - or they would leave seeking better opportunities. But now circumstances have allowed some of those workers to leave and it turns out we wanted them to be trapped in those bad jobs and they are bad people for choosing to go elsewhere.
