  1. GNU Linux is just a set of GNU tolls built around the linux kernel. Linux us just the kernel. I foresee linux becoming the dominant operating system since it can span many architectures. The very thing that makes linux strong will also make it weak. That is the cross compilers. High level abstraction takes away optimizations and only leads to larger bloat code. This is something linux will have to deal with in the years to come.
