Why? Almost all the materials would be headed down the gravity well. Just drop it.

@venataciamoon2789 Except that cancer is hurting a living being whereas we would be spreading life to lifeless rocks. We are the genitals of the Earth, not a disease.

@Marylandbrony Why, exactly, couldn't trillions of people live in space and in other bodies? Why would the population stabilize when there is thousands of times more resources and energy? Every other time mankind has found new land and resources our population grows. Why would this be different? Any reasoning at all?

@reentrysfs6317 What do space catapults have to do with sky hooks? Also, when I looked into it the only paper I found discussing the g forces experienced on a sky hook says it's like 1.5 g max. "Non-Synchronous Orbital Skyhooks for the Moon and Mars with Conventional Materials" - Hans Moravec 1978 I would love to see your source though.

@johnwade7842 No, it requires change in velocity, not fuel. Shoot the material from your mine earthwards using a rail gun. No fuel required. No space elevator needed. Just a big metal bin full of whatever raw material you've mined whipped homewards.

@johnwade7842 Solar sails would be a fuel free option as well if slower is an option. These can be sped up using lasers in orbit or on the ground if needed. No fuel needed as well.

@johnwade7842 Far easier than a space elevator, which was the point. No one suggested we could do this tomorrow using existing technology.

@reentrysfs6317 Literally no one is talking about human transportation. Space catapults or rail guns are not at all like sky hooks. Rail guns use electromagnets to accelerate a conductive payload down a linear rail. A sky hook is a giant rotating tether that can pick up items off the ground and rotate them into space. This would not create hundreds of g's. Why would it? You would match speed with the sky hook. You wouldn't be jerked from zero speed. Sky hooks also wouldn't be useful for transporting materials mined in space to Earth, which is the discussion. No people or sky hooks are involved.

@reentrysfs6317 Remember that the subject was the OP's suggestion that heavy space industry isn't possible without space elevators, not the transportation of people.
