Couldn't we just have electrolysis stations instead of gas stations that use grid power to separate tap water into oxygen and hydrogen, eliminating transport costs and co2 emissions if the grid power is based on renewables? Everything needed already flows to gas stations. They'd just need the proper equipment as well as A LOT of power and would only need to store a relatively small amount on site to keep up with daily surges in demand. We'd probably need a crazy amount of solar panels and nuclear plants for that though.
