  1. Your explanation isn't really correct for why it's is colder at the poles. Even if the earth's atmosphere didn't exist it would still be colder. This is because the light is coming in at a steeper angle than at the equator and therefore covers more ground when it hits the earth, delivering less watts per square meter to the surface. This can bee seen by shining a flashlight close to a piece of paper at a 90 degree angle, making a circle. If you tilt the light or paper, the circle will turn into a large ellipse with the same amount of total light with the larger ellipse consequentially being dimmer. Hope that helps.
