  2. Wow, it's almost like people set up a social system to pool resources to get things they need to start out as a family. No shit everyone knows that baby showers and the like are for gifts. That is literally what they are for. It's not like people have been doing them since hunter-gatherer days or anything. The purpose is to get the things you need to have a baby or get married etc. and have the community help out with the understanding that you will do the same for them and theirs. Why do normal social interactions seem novel to you?
