Actually scientists have a VERY good idea about the maximum magnitude of a subduction zone earthquake can be as it is based upon the area of the rupture surface and the magnitude of movement along that surface. Furthermore we have oodles of evidence from past events to go upon, as shown in this video. Basically, adults are handling things; no need to keep wetting your panties.
