  1. crazisasuke Well, most power plants would have to be shut down and almost everyone would not be able to get to work. The best way to change that quickly would be to switch from fossil to biofuels as that would be much cheaper infrastructure and car replacement wise than either switching to electric cars (where would they get the power to charge them?) or hydrogen, although that's still currently not possible using today's carbon neutral biofuel tech. Basically, we don't have a replacement ready and it would be absurdly expensive to switch that fast anyway. 20-30 years is totally reasonable though for switching to bacteria produced biofuels, and if we discover how to do fusion power, hydrogen would be stupid easy to produce cleanly.

  2. Travis Young Is there enough methanol to replace all gasoline usage? We used 136.78 billion gallons last year.

  3. Travis Young I imagine it's currently being used for something though, and 37.75 billion gallons is far less than 136.78 gallons, further, methanol delivers less miles per gallon, so you'd need a bit more.

  4. Travis Young Actually the reason the price at the pump is so high is because we export all of our domestic oil and import oil for our own use. How would the methanol provide competition at the pump if it's already being used for other purposes and there isn't even close to enough of it?
