Ryan Swanson There's no life in the asteroid belt to kill, everything is already just rocks, metal and ice and there is millions of times the amount of everything the Earth has available within the asteroid belt, Oort Cloud, and Keiper Belt. It would take us thousands, if not tens of thousands of years to use up all of the resources in the solar system even at fantastic levels of development. Space development is the key to saving the Earth in fact. If you don't have to manufacture or farm or get fuel from Earth anymore, nor use fossil fuels as solar power is incredibly abundant in space. Earth could be used only for habitation and preservation of natural environments. Just one 1500 meter asteroid has more platinum in it than man has ever mined in all of history. The Earth is poor in comparison and would no longer need to be raped to advance our species. Isn't it much better to utilize dead space rocks and dead, airless moons?

  6. Ryan Swanson If someone goes and takes an asteroid and does with it what they please, is it not theirs? If they mine it totally out into ore, water, and silicates, and then use this material to make products, they still won't own them? What makes rocks in space so special that we can't go get them and use them for own own purposes?

  9. Ryan Swanson Overpopulation is a food problem, not an actual room problem. Cities themselves don't take up that much room, it's the farms that support them that do. You could also build arcologies or vertical cities, cities underground, and orbital cities within hollowed out asteroids, built from scratch, or grown from genetically modified trees. The resources of space make many things possible. I'm not saying it will save the Earth, that depends on people's choices, it just makes it possible without genocide or limiting ourselves as a species.

  11. Ryan Swanson I like to think of the human species as the sexual organs of the Earth. She's in the young teen years right now, just starting to fill out. We're giving her acne, she's all knees and elbows and she's not looking as cute as she used to when she was a little girl, but once she's matured into a woman and spread herself (life) to other worlds she will bloom once more into something more beautiful than she ever was, with daughter worlds providing new homes to the DNA that formed from the very primordial rocks and waters of her birth. We are the vehicle for the spreading of life to other worlds. In time, we will even rework worlds to suit the life that Earth became. Humans are troublesome organs, but they will serve Earth as her loins just by doing what we always have done, explore new areas and take life we prefer or that hitchhikes along for the ride. We will bring life to a seemingly dead portion of our galaxy, something that will last far after our species has retired to the pages of history. Damn, gotta smoke less reefer, makes me wax poetic lol.
