  1. It's like a British person from Oxford calling themselves "English". The language is called Persian (i.e. Farsi), spoken by Persians. There are ethnic minorities in the country who speak different languages, like the Pashtuns, Kurds, Azerbaijanis. Members of the majority ethnicity call themselves Persians to be distinguished from other ethnicities and languages. I know a guy from Iran, he refers to himself as to "from Iran, Persian, with some Pashtun ancestry".
