From someone with a relative who used to be a drug dealer who ruined people's lives, but then turned his life around, and from an attempted rape victim who forgave the aggressor after 12 years of PTSD: I don't think it's wrong to think "I don't know the torturers' personal stories". To illustrate, there's a difference in Harry Potter between Draco Malfoy who starts to doubt his evil convictions and doesn't want to torture or kill anyone, but is forced into it; and Bellatrix Lestrange who is a cruel murderer. I'm all for the good old "judge the sin and not the sinner". It leaves space for the people who have doubts to go over to the good side. But justice must be served, of course. And the compassion for the victims should be a hundred times stronger and, of course, an active one (help them if possible).
