  4. Some of the rich have their children in the service too. Except they have bachelor's degrees, and so they're all officers. You would need to salute them and call them Sir or Ma'am depending on who you're saluting.

  8. Thay are taking care of me though - I can't complain. I was in the army for 12 years and the Reserves for 8 years. I started at the old age of 33 and by 54 I was retired. Vets must learn how to file claims for injuries and problems and the VA will hear you out. Most people can't retire in their 50's, well I did.

  9.  @BmorePatriot  Thanks for your service! I did many years in the enlisted side. 12 were active and 8 were in the Reserves. Only an E-5 / SGT but that's 20 years. It had it's ups and downs and I do believe that Vets that speak up, file claims for any problems mental and physical are treated with respect and taken care of. ANd you file a claim to get VA comp, get your monthly check I know I did.

  13.  @petervanschepen8809  I was in the Army for 12 active years. First in combat arms as a Bradley mechanic for 4 years and I didn't even join until near the cut-off age - I was 33 years old. Then I went into the Signal corp, reclassfication MOS beacuse I had some health issues as a mechanic. I finished the next 8 years with one year overseas in the middle East, but the fighting wsa really done in Iraq by then. I had a wife and 2 young kids waiting for me back in the states. When I returned home I wanted to leave the service so I did not re-enlist, but now well into my 40's I knew to continue in the Reserves with 12 years of service I needed to go for the 20 years. So about 4 years ago I retired and was only a SGT / E-5. I complained many times about not going to ALC, Advanced Leaders Course so I could be promoted to Staff Sergeant. But my lame ass Platoon Sergeant who was a Staff Sergeant did not advance me, instead he played favorites for someone that lived closer to him in South Carolina. I complained via e-mail to the Senior NCO's and they took notice and had the date set up for ALC. However fate played a hand in the Reserves HRC sending me a retirement letter, the infamous 20 year Retirement Letter which I accepted. Igave my school seat to a younger NCO that was already wearing the SSG rank but still needed the school or he would lose it.

  14.  @timf2279  Yes I agree. I've used the VA Heathcare from time to time and I'm fully covered in any ER in any hospital 100%. Right now it is my medical insurance provider and I have almost no payments to make, a very small prescription co-pay. Every veteran that has served needs to enroll in the VA Healthcare sytem and carry that ID with you. I know I do. Also, some veterns never do injury or mental health claims. I encouage them to do so because they can end up a compensated veteran, and the money helps a lot in these dark times.

  15. Marines is the toughest branch to be in though. It always was. If your wanted looser standards then they should have joined the Army. I put up with favoritism many years in the Army, and I did join in my early 30's and I say that was the reason the others were favored. I retired from the Reserves an E-5 / SGT almost exactly 4 years ago. You can get what you want out if it but YOU have to want it, nobody else. I ended up going back to the VA for claims including PTSD, but then that's how you become stable finacnially.

Also, your point is kind of like defund the police, that to me is a stupid thing to do. I understand that some police abuse power but that is the down side, there are victims, it super - sucks.

  19. The truth is that because you have a "worthless degree" - find worth in knowing it's worth something if you join the Army. You get to go to OCS (Officer Candidate School) after basic training, or it is their basic training. After graduation you are a 2nd Lieutenant , the first rank of officer so you will be saluted by all enlisted personnel (soldiers) if they walk by you outside or happen to be next to you. You get to go to meetings with officers that run the Army and advise all NCOs (Sergeants) on just about anything. You get to be in charge of all enlisted soldiers and Sergeants under your section. If I were you I'd consider going this route. It would only benefit you.

  20.  @Zemlja_je_ravna  I served for more than a few years, and I always thought about my family, friends and felt like well this is how I earn my living. You never think about the rich people. Therefore you're fighting for your people and yourself 100%. And also when you go overseas you even think about those that may have been there before you.

I don't think too many GenZers will join a voluntary service in the Army, Navy , Marines, Air Force etc.... If many troops are required and we get low or thin on the homeland then the draft would be re-instated and that would be very interesting!!

  22. Well most are taken care of, the Dept Of VA is there for that purpose and I personally can't complain. The medical care is not the best though, except for surgery. The VA Hospital system is there but the clinics need improving.

  24. I've known soldiers that served an entire career without even going overseas. Many one termers never even go overseas they joined mainly for for the college benefit. Really we don't need a huge military force of foot soldiers, marines, airmen and sailors, and coasties anyway because of the ridiculous weapons. It would come down to pushing buttons but it should be over quick.

  25.  @masterchaoss  The marketplace seems to be the answer to buying healthcare. I hear there are some low-cost plans there. I'm just using VA heathcare and it's okay but I don't have a dentist and haven't been to one in years. There have been suggestions about a program for heathcare like a VA healthcare system and to have it for everyone. I don't think it's possible, the people still have to fund it, I don't think the government can, There's many more times the amount of people compared to the the number of veterans. That's a big difference in money.

  26.  @scottandrews947  Well all they really need to do is plan, and their careers are the most important factor when ready to buy a house. Why not serve 4 years in the military just for the VA home loan by itself, I won't even talk about 100 grand for college. In 2021 at age 56 and after a divorce a year before it I bougt my house with $1000 down - and they say it's nothing down but I think it was for an inspection and something else. My house is a three-bedroom townhouse and everything in it works. My son, who is disabled with autism stays here on the weekends. What I'm saying is having the benefit, and because of an honorable discharge when leaving the service (whatever branch) isn't enough, he / she must also time the market. The market in 2021 was a buyer's market...... low intertest mortgages and a little better prices on houses were there. All that will return, all they need to do is plan their futures, work towards them, eventually leave the service, time the market and then same thing can be had.

  27.  @TorpidTerror-0A  I served in the Army for 12 years, and I was a contractor for a short time after I got out. A large part of the military budget, I would guess at least half is paid to the contractor companies such as Raytheon, General Dynamics and more that have unfamiliar names. As long as the USA is safe as far as another country doesn't try to invade us or even pick a fight with us based on our proven record I'd say it's worth it. I remember having a conversation with a Staff Sergeant who said "What is the Army's purpose?" Answer: To defend the USA and fight the nations wars. That's one answer but also an answer is To deter the nations wars. A show of force is simply, for example Two thousand American troops in uniform on the line. How good we look and our military presence alone fights and wins wars doing nothing else - sometimes. Other times you're going in, it's as simple as that.

  30.  @likeawhispr  I agree with your statement but not entirely. I served in a combat arms MOS the first 4 years I was in. And I enlisted at he age of 33, much older than most of them that were like 18. I did it because I was newly married and suddenly out of work. I served in an Armoured Cavalry Unit that had a long history. I was in Colorado for 4 years. Anyway, I like this the most because - I'll dare say it. It was 98% guys so I didn't worry that some lady would want my job at all. And secondly, they were alright people, you felt that you could trust them and possibly with your life. The officers were young too but they were responsible for keeping everything on track towards whatever the mission was. The sergeants were really the ones responsible for the lower enlisted though, but a lot of them wanted to sit on their ass a lot. I'm speaking as a lower enlisted mechanic, and I can't give out any other detail.

  32.  @COOLAUSTINO  I served at an older age than most everybody, so I was not effected mentally as much as a young recruit (well that's what I thought). However after I left in 2010 things did not go my way as far as employment. And I was the provider for my family and I started to crack under pressure, I had to move out and do whatever jobs I could get, and I wound up with a misdemeanor assault on my record! To get to the point here I had to do a VA claim for PTSD, and I can relate to you though. I ended up with a rating for mixed anxiety and depression and it added like a 40% increase to my physical injury rating of my right arm. So the VA Comp is worth doing the claims and examinations. I hope you're doing this and at least get the financial benefit and the health or mental health help you need.

  35.  @Alex-07C2  The Vets with PTSD and are homeless (or not) need to be evaluated by the Department of Veteran Affairs. Each former soldier or Marine or whatever branch needs that 50% PTSD rating in order to help him / her survive. That's about $1400 a month compenstaion pay right there, and not counting any physical injuries from serving. Honorable Veterans need to use ALL of their benefits, because they are the ones that should never be homeless.

  36.  @Alex-07C2  It's been a while for me but traditionally it's been the college award, I'll call it that but the wording could be different but it's college for 3 years, to include housing pay (BAH). ALso the cash bonus for completing Basic Training and AIT (Advanced Individual Training); that is for your job / career. This varies per MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) but mine was $8000 back in 1998, so many should be higher. After completion of contract and separation from the military there's the VA Loan. Buy a house with virtually no money down. These benefits are available many years after your honorable service. Also any emergency room coverage in any hospital in the US, or of course a VA Hospital. Healthcare is free at any VA Hospital or clinic. Also options to re-enlist like cash bonuses to stay in AKA Reenlistment Bonuses per MOS.

  37. Not true all they had to do was file a claim and get it to intake. I filed more than one claim and that turns into VA comp, you get paid. Also with an honorable discharge from service all you do is go to a big VA hospital and get in-processed. There ya go you get free medical care, and you get your medical ID card.

  39.  @templin7  Go like this, $17 an hour is like 17 X 2 =34. It's more like 34K a year. the formula just works, I figured it out many years ago. $17 an hour X 40 hours = $680. 680 X 52 weeks = $35,360 a year. Pretty close to 34K. You can do it with any hourly figure. $20 an hour = 40K a year. So it's probably 42K at the most.

  41.  @travisjacques633  First ones in that's why it's tough, and a tough mentality. I think Marines do better in respecting rank though from what I saw when I was around them. I was in the Army from 1998 to 2010, and most of it I wasn't combat arms. I think I liked being in combat arms better, they looked out for each other a lot more. Espirit De Corp I think that's what it means. And I know Marines say Semper Fi. Thanks for your service.

The easy way would have been to go to a US Embassy in Vietnam? I don't know if they had them then, but there are several in Vietnam since the 1990's. So he would have needed to go to a US Army post and tell them he got away. He would have been taken care of 100%.
