@andywalex Well put, I was a Reservist for 8 years after serving 12 years enlisted (Army). And that does equal 20 years and in 2018 I retired only an E-5 / SGT. I recently heard from a LTC (Lt. COL) I knew during the last few years I was in that a young Major (early 30's) refused the jab, through texting is how I was in touch with the LTC. By the way I retired at the age of 54 it's along story. Anyways I would guess the major resigned....... I don't know if they re-relist like the enlisted side but I think he got out on principal. He still had a good federal job kind of related to the unit. It's a shame he is bright and outgoing with the men (and women). Anyway, I heard on the Mark Levin show today..... or the one before it that the Army and the military is asking them to come back now. And really admitting they are wrong or were wrong to make good soldiers get out with an other than dishonorable discharge for not getting the jab when ordered.

@chrish7336 If there really is a shortage of new recruits - I heard it was because of the transparncy in medical records access. All this computer access becuase they sign a records release. I heard that there are just as many that want to join but are getting disqualified unexpectantly.

@Dan-di9jd Too many of Gen Z would rather play video games and sit around than concentrate on being productive, working hard and having goals. I'm just saying if it's tough to find a path to some kind of a rewarding career, than really consider the armed forces for a career. First, what branch do you think you're interested in. Talk to a recruiter and prepare for an ASVAB test. Nothing is for sure until a contract is signed, nothing to lose in preparing. A person can always changes his / her mind before signing.

@borrago In the post it didn't say he was Reserves or National Guard. The first 4 years I served at Ft. Carson was active duty - that is the USA. And that is all someone would need when you go regular Army! In 2000 I went to Egypt for 1 month; a training exercise with Egypt and other countries military but that's besides the point. My point is if he was regular Army it wouldn't matter where he served. Also a guy like that trying so hard to get deployed when all he would need to do is go regular (active) Army is stupid, in my opinion.

@ambiarock590 Well if you can get to that pension (yes it's 20 years) you'll be sitting on your ass a lot, but with a lot less worries. Also the health problems and injuries, well Vets file claims for those. And the VA helps with health care and we get paid for injuries and sometimes health issues too.

The fighting thing overseas should really be the first reason against enlisting but it is the military. I was in the Army a long time, and now knowwing what I know I think the Navy is a better branch. It seems safer and not so dirty you could go to field training in the Army, and set up tents and all that stuff. LIve out in the base camp.

Yeah that's crazy, you would think that any First Sergeant would get in the way of that discharge, with the backing of his Captain or Lt. Colonel. My time in the Army was a little different and I learned that in a Combat Arms unit the Frist Sergeant just kicked ass. A short 5'3" black 1SG that if he didn't like it he'd rip that paperwork to shreds. The Captain would agree and people would go back to business. It was an Armored cavalry Unit in Colorado. When I went to non-combat arms in a different MOS a few years later it was soft as hell. Easier for me though, Iwent in a much older recruit and all, but it just didn't feel the same as time went on. The snowflake crap that happened to your son .... well in combat arms he would have gotten over it because they will push the hell out of you!! And that's the shit I miss.

@dparks68 The guy with the Data Electrician job is doing well with that so really there's no reason to leave a job that has the possibility of a career for the Navy, altough, in the Navy - they have some high tech , high value occupation MOS's there I'm sure. And they get to travel and see the world when they stop at the ports. I know a couple Navy vets, well maybe it was just one but he told me a lot of stuff that I thought was great.

And the standards to come in would get a lot better too. Less nit-picking.

@George-x2s2s A VA Hospital should be able to give you medical care. I get mine through a VA clinic but the follow ups are slow. The things I could use more care on are not as urgent as yours are though. If you got to the VA Hospital for Emergency care (at ER) then they will need to help you.

@lawrencewiddis2447 You've got it. Anything that requires quick action will get it. Just go into a VA Hospital ER with your complaint. I did more than once.

Maybe it was lunch time?

@donald8354 OK and how long was your Dad in the Air Force?
1
@vincentlukeking Well for me it wasn't all that bad. I don't want to get into but it can be rewarding, it kind of depends on the person. My time in service 1998 to 2010 active duty Army. Age at entry was 33. Army Reserves 2010 to 2018, retired SGT E-5. Retired age 54. I have my own little house in Virginia.

@vincentlukeking In this world it seems that anything can happen. Be prepared to fight for the little bit you've got.

@donald8354 He had a good job in the Air Force and after that he probably got a good one. He's right about how he feels about his time in, of course.

@jonathanwatkins6951 If someone is somehow pushed out of the Army after 15 years, well I was a Reservist and knew a female E-5 / SGT. She was let go from active duty Army at 15 years because of failure to make SSG. I can't remember the proper terminology right now but it's true. So she joined the Army Reserves and completed 5 years there. If you retire at 20 years then you'll get the pension at age 60. I did the same thing but I chose to leave the regular Army an E-5 after 12 years of service but I did the contract to be a Reservist before I even got out. The I served for 8 years in a few different units. Never getting promoted to SSG though, and I couldn't get my secret clearance back I lost it for some domestic problems at home, it weas always my wife going crazy, it wasn't even me. But I kept serving anyway, the clearance was to look at more sensitive documents and to go overseas for a few weeks - sometime. So it wasn't 100% necessary I just stayed stateside. Anyway I turned down ALC, a 30 day military leadership school that is required for promotion because I receieved a 20 years of service letter at the same time. So then I retired in September 2018 still just a SGT. My pension begins next month!!

@valkyriefrost5301 The VA in Cali is run by democrats. Think about it.

You must have served a long time ago. I served 1998 to 2010; Army. And 2010 to 2018 Reserves. I've found that for me civilians treated me just as bad, if not worse so I ended up moving on, or getting pissed off enough to curse someone out higher than me and getting fired. So I live on VA Comp, and expect my Army pension next year. It isn't for everyone but for me it's what I have some pride in.

It's just that GenZers are mostly entitled kids and just a bit too lazy to join any branch of the military. It is a scary thing though I realize that. I joined the Army well past the age of 30 in 1998 because my views had changed and my choices for a career were getting very slim.
