Life for everyone was incredibly hard. Most people today have no clue how hard life used to be for most of recorded history. Humanity has prospered despite the war, famine and disease. People used to work together because they had to to survive. Life used to be considered precious. I don't think the cavalier attitude to killing today is an improvement of society
