I used to try to tell my university students that they would learn the most when failing while trying. The better, more aspirational and continually trying students would work this out in the process of trying, failing, not giving up and being motivated to not fail again. The embarrassment of failing at a task was a resolve to not want to feel that same way again, where what they then learned would stick with them forever .....unlike some (probably most actually!) of my lectures which could quickly just go in one ear and then out the other, forever forgotten and not learned from. I loved to see them work the bigger picture out for themselves and was proud to be the person to help them see it for themselves.....watching the penny drop was alway great and made the rest well and truly worth it.

In the modern era I just call it 'self-convenient cluelessness' or 'self-serving apathy'.

The EGO part of their critical thinking brain has been over-'encouraged (and rewarded) by manipulators, to deliberately Hi-JACK and manipulate the natural BALANCE of ego/conscience in them to then self-reward THEMSELVES into being useful-idiots FOR their manipulators....just as their manipulators always intended. It works with the conscience too, just amplify GUILT into an equally regressed form of suicidal-empathy based useful-idiocy.
