I learned that Edison developed bulbs with multiple filaments, because the filaments had a short life. The intention was not to immediately throw the lamp away, but simply switch to a spare filament present in the bulb. However, he noticed that when the selected filament was lit, a current was also flowing through the unconnected filaments that were simply in the vacuum.

@VoltisArt That was Edison's Problem. He stuck to direct current, where no transformers (on the principle of induction) could be used. As a result, Westinghouse eventually won the argument with alternating current and we now have an alternating current grid.
