I am Belgian (European) and have been using an induction hob in the kitchen for over 20 years because I didn't want any gas pipes in the house. It was quite expensive to buy at the time, but I wouldn't want any other hob. It is incredibly fast, but the range of settings is also so wide that you can even melt chocolate on it without burning it. Of course gas still has merit as an energy source, especially if you want to work off grid, while camping, for example.
