  1. I was detained at the border and had my car searched when travelling from Canada into the US some years ago. The border guards confiscated two grapefruits and an orange from my thermos container and gave me a stern warning about bringing citrus fruits into the US. I had to read and sign pages of documents admitting guilt before they’d give my car keys back. They made me sit in a waiting room and hand over my keys. They donned masks and surgical gloves and began their search, as if looking for a bomb. It was everything I could do to keep from bursting out laughing at these two very serious ‘fruit police’. That was their only job, looking for citrus fruits. It was only after I drove away I realized Canada doesn’t have the climate for growing citrus fruit; it’s all imported from California or Florida. In effect, I was basically ‘returning’ the fruit to its country of origin. Don’t mess with the fruit police.

  2. We used to cross into Buffalo coming from Toronto with nothing but our drivers license. Now you need a passport and you’re investigated by US border services just to fly over US air space when flying directly from Mexico to Canada.

  3. A winning lottery ticket was bought with a stolen credit card. Thieves haven’t cashed-in the ticket for fear of being arrested. The credit card owner is has no access to the winnings since he doesn’t possess the winning ticket, even though it was bought with his card.

  4. I volunteered at a local FM radio station run by the local university in town, University of Toronto. A few years near the end of my time there a woman near the top had absconded funds for the radio stations operating budget. These funds were raised from mandatory annual student council fees. This woman took thousands for herself and went to Montreal one weekend on a shopping spree. I heard later she worked with BLM Toronto.

  8. Don’t leave your electronic key fob near your front door, or near any window. Thieves will pick up the transponder signal off your key fob and match it to unlock and start your electronic ignition and drive your car away, all in about 2 minutes.

  18. I remember hearing this sort of thing to a passenger who was flying from Canada to somewhere in Europe, but who was stopped in the U.K. during a connecting flight because her passport was to expire in a few months hence. England wasn’t even her destination, just passing through.

  19. I was flying from Toronto to San Francisco many years ago to see my ailing brother. My brother was dying and the rest of my family were already in S.F., but I almost didn’t make it. I was stopped in Toronto Pearson airport by U.S. Customs agents for not having enough money in my pocket. I was shocked when they pulled me aside and asked me how much money I had in my pocket. I thought it was some kind of third world shakedown (in my own country!) when they told me I didn’t have enough money to travel to the U.S. for the two weeks (on my return ticket) I smartly retorted “how much money is enough?” The agent sat down at an adding machine and calculated the exact amount of money I was required to have with me in order to be let into the U.S. for the two weeks. They eventually relented and I got to my gate in the nick of time.

  23. A couple comes home late from a party and realizes they’re locked out of their house. They call a 24-hour locksmith and he rushes over and picks the lock open (or drills it out if he’s not that good at picking). They get in their house and they give him $250 cash and he’s happy and drives away. Next thing he’s being pulled over by police for ‘break & enter’. The couple didn’t actually live there; they were burglars and ransacked the place of jewelry and other valuables, but they got away. The locksmith goes to jail (without his lockpick set). What’s there to protect the locksmith from this scenario?

  50. In Toronto many parking meters only take credit cards. They no longer take cash. And they don’t accept debit cards. I am prohibited from owning a credit card as it is a requirement of being on long term disability (a credit card is considered getting a loan). I recently suffered damages by getting a parking ticket when I parked at one of these new ‘credit-card-only’ parking stub payment machines. I had hundreds of dollars on my debit card but it doesnt accept debit. I also had about $15. in cash and coins on my but the machine doesn’t take that either. Should street parking in Toronto be only for those wealthy enough to afford a credit card now?
