The UN debated for over 40 days over a single word “genocide”, before they lifted a finger to stop the Rwandan genocide in which over 800,000 people were slaughtered like animals, while the world watched and was powerless to do anything. They debated whether or not what was happening in Rwanda was technically genocide or not. This debate went on leisurely for weeks and weeks, while hundreds of thousands of people were being chopped up, uncontested, casually and with impunity.

What happened is a younger and entirely new generation were introduced to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict through the new lens of an actual lens, the smart phone and social media, while the older generations were still looking at the same conflict through the Walter Cronkite, Hasbara-spun, AIPAC-influenced, soft-pedal version of the same horrible situation and wondering why young people were so upset, ignorant to the fact this new generation was witnessing the very atrocities their parents and grandparents told them and convinced them was supposed to be unacceptable behaviour for any country in a rules-based, rule of law, liberal democracy.
