  1. Possible scenario: Maybe they weren’t trying to land. Maybe they were setting up for a SECOND go-around. Everything about the plane suggests this; no flaps extended, no spoilers raised, high rate of speed, and no landing gear. But they just couldn’t achieve V1 for some reason.

  3. ESPECIALLY when the engines aren’t working The first century of flight was thought to have fixed all the obvious problems and dangers associated with air travel, the so called ‘low hanging fruit’ as it were. But this particular tragedy highlights everything that could go wrong ... going wrong.

  8. As problems are found and fixed over the past century of air travel any remaining crashes these days seem to be the result of a greater number of smaller, seemingly unrelated factors that somehow line up to create the perfect storm

  9. Someone designed and built a three or four foot solid, reinforced concrete crash barrier at the end of a jetliner runway. I am shocked.

  10. It’s a testament to the idea of redundancy, ingenuity and the level of engineering and design that the door plug remained in place, WITHOUT any bolts, as long as it did, even more so considering how many pressure/de pressure cycles it went through in its short life.
