  1. Putin would’ve threatened nuclear war no matter what position Europe and NATO would have taken, or not. This is the rhetoric of a bully and a psychopathic mind.

Anything short of an utter military rout, and a complete and total humiliation on the world stage would be seen (mistakenly) by Putin as a sign of weakness on NATOs part, and therefore possibly invite further encroachment on other European countries by Russian forces. This is why an utter rout is the most sensible option for NATO and Europe. The sooner the better.
