It is foolish to think Putin himself has some sort of nostalgia for empire, or ‘the good ole’ days’ of the Soviet regime; no, he is merely playing into the nostalgic aspirations of his people, specifically the older generations who actually do remember living under Communist rule. He will pretend to be nostalgic, but this is just an act to appease his ‘voters’, as we say in the West.
