In the 1930’s my uncle was taught filing by hand in his training for the navy during the war. He served as an engine room artificer. There was no hardware stores when crossing the frigid mid-Atlantic with German U-boats hunting you. During their training one of their tests for hand filing was to file two hunks of steel to such a fine flat finish that placing one piece on top of the other and grabbing only the top piece would also take along the bottom piece, merely by suction. I never forgot that story my father told me, and I suppose that’s where I developed an appreciation for my files.
