What’s lacking in modern residential architecture is an intermediate space between the inside of the house and the outside, something like a porch or enclosed veranda, with removable shutters or glass casements replaced by screens in the summer, and enclosed in the colder months for added insulation, which can act as a mud room for skis, boots, bulkier jackets, etc.
